International Recognition at LOOP Design Awards 2025
New Delhi, 24 September 2025: Harrow International School, Bengaluru, designed by CP Kukreja Architects, has been named a Winner in the Architecture – Educational Buildings category at the prestigious LOOP Design Awards 2025.
Selected from over 550 entries across 49 countries, the recognition underscores the school’s contribution to advancing institutional design by seamlessly interweaving heritage, ecology, and pedagogy. Based in Portugal, the LOOP Design Awards celebrate global excellence in architecture, interiors, and product design, spotlighting innovation and sustainability.
Extending a 450-Year Legacy
As Harrow’s first campus in India, the project reinterprets the school’s 450-year-old classical identity within Bengaluru’s ecological and cultural context. At the heart of the masterplan lies a preserved natural water channel, which doubles as a landscape feature and spatial organiser, linking academic, residential, cultural, and athletic facilities through courtyards, shaded pathways, and green spines.
Voices of Leadership
“Education is as much about the spaces in which it unfolds as it is about the curriculum it imparts,” said Dr. Aseem Chauhan, Chairman, Governing Body, Harrow International School Bengaluru.
“This global recognition affirms our belief that schools must nurture not only academic excellence but also a deeper awareness of culture, ecology, and the responsibilities of citizenship in a changing world.”
Dikshu C. Kukreja, Managing Principal, CP Kukreja Architects, added:
“Architecture for education must do more than provide infrastructure; it must cultivate imagination, community, and resilience. At Harrow Bengaluru, we sought to craft a milieu where heritage and modernity converse, where sustainability is embedded in every gesture, and where the built environment itself becomes a teacher. This award reaffirms the responsibility of architecture to shape futures, not just buildings.”
Sustainable and Contextual Design
The design reimagines Harrow’s iconic brick architecture using locally sourced materials while drawing inspiration from Bengaluru’s tradition of palaces, gardens, and lakes. Key features include:
-
A 30-metre-high clock tower serving as both a symbolic landmark and vertical service core.
-
Bioswales, pedestrian-friendly networks, and north-south orientation for daylight and ventilation.
-
Water-sensitive planning ensuring complete on-site rainwater management.
-
Passive strategies like shaded arcades and courtyards that reduce heat gain.
These design innovations have earned the project a USGBC Platinum rating, setting a benchmark for sustainable educational environments worldwide.
